DOB (Driver On Board) LED modules are integrated light sources that combine the driver circuitry and LED light source onto a single substrate. Their core advantages lie in their compact structure, lower cost, higher reliability, and convenient installation and maintenance. They offer clearly defined selection ranges and corresponding solutions for color rendering index, color temperature, luminous efficacy, and heat dissipation, adapting to various application scenarios.

I. Introduction and Core Benefits of DOB LED Modules

DOB technology eliminates the need for a separate external driver, integrating the driving function onto the light board. It operates directly with AC mains power (e.g., AC 120V/230V) and is commonly found in indoor and outdoor lighting such as downlights, track lights, panel lights, and light boxes.

Core Advantages & Detailed Explanation

Compact Structure: Reduces independent drivers and complex wiring, resulting in a smaller size and facilitating the design of lighting fixtures in confined spaces (such as ultra-thin downlights and recessed lights).

Cost Optimization: Reduced component count lowers BOM and assembly costs, increasing production efficiency.

Higher Reliability: Reduces potential failure points; the electrolytic capacitor-free design significantly extends lifespan (often exceeding 50,000 hours), reducing maintenance frequency.

Easy Installation: Direct connection to AC power, eliminating the need for additional driver wiring, shortening installation time, suitable for mass production applications.

Flexible Design: Adapts to various shapes and power ratings, supports dimming (SCR/0-10V), color temperature adjustment, and other functions, easily integrated into smart modules.

Energy Efficiency and Electromagnetic Compatibility: High-quality solutions achieve PFC ≥ 0.85, THD ≤ 15%, and luminous efficacy up to 100-120 lm/W; some solutions achieve low/flicker-free operation.


II. Selection of CRI, Color Temperature, Luminous Efficacy, and Heat Dissipation

1. CRI Selection

Standard Range: Mainstream options include Ra 80, Ra 90, Ra 95, higher CRI can be customized for special scenarios.

Selection Recommendations:

General home, office, and commercial lighting: Ra 80 is sufficient for basic color reproduction.

For scenarios with high color requirements, such as clothing, jewelry, catering, and galleries: Prioritize Ra 90 and above to accurately present the texture and color of materials.

For professional scenarios such as medical and printing: Ra 95 and above are recommended to ensure accurate color judgment.


2. Color Temperature (CCT) Selection

Standard range: 2700K (warm yellow) to 6500K (cool white), some products support multiple levels such as 3000K/4000K/5000K/6000K.

Selection Recommendations:

Bedrooms, living rooms, and hotel rooms: 2700K-3500K to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere.

Offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, and hospitals: 4000K-5000K, neutral white light to improve focus and efficiency.

Industrial lighting, warehouses, and outdoor floodlighting: 5700K-6500K, high color temperature improves visibility and operational safety.

Intelligent lighting scenarios: Optional multi-color temperature switching modules to adapt to different time periods and activity needs.


3. Luminous Efficacy Selection

Standard range: Mainstream luminous efficacy is approximately 100-120 lm/W, high-voltage chip solutions can reach over 110 lm/W, and some high-end products have even higher luminous efficacy.

Selection recommendations: Prioritize meeting energy efficiency standards (e.g., Level 1 energy efficiency), and choose based on the brightness requirements and power limitations of the application scenario.

Commercial lighting (e.g., supermarkets, shops): For high cost-effectiveness, choose a solution of 100-110 lm/W, balancing cost and energy saving.

Energy-saving renovations, high ceilings, and other scenarios with high energy efficiency requirements: Choose products of 110-120 lm/W and above for longer-term energy savings.

Pay attention to the balance between luminous efficacy and light quality; avoid sacrificing color rendering index and color temperature stability simply for high lumens.


4. Heat Dissipation Selection

Heat dissipation directly affects light decay and lifespan. For DOB modules, which integrate drivers, thermal design is particularly critical.

Substrate Selection:

* **Standard Power (≤20W):** Aluminum substrate (thermal conductivity 1-3 W/(m·K)) – low cost, easy to process, and meets general heat dissipation requirements.

* **Medium-High Power (20-50W):** High thermal conductivity aluminum substrate (≥2 W/(m·K)) or ceramic substrate (e.g., aluminum nitride AlN, thermal conductivity 170-230 W/(m·K)) are preferred, suitable for high power density scenarios.

* **High Power (≥50W):** Consider thermoelectric separation substrates or embedded heat pipes/vapor chambers for rapid heat dissipation and junction temperature control.

* **Heat Dissipation Structure Selection:**

* **Passive Heat Dissipation:** Finned heat sinks (aluminum fins/copper fins, optimized fin height and spacing ratio, such as 1:1.5), heat sinks, etc., suitable for most indoor low-to-medium power modules.

Active cooling: For high-power outdoor or enclosed environments (such as high ceiling lights and floodlights), forced air cooling with fans can be added; in extreme cases, liquid cooling or immersion cooling can be used, but the cost is higher.

Temperature Interface Material (TIM): Filling the space between the substrate and the heatsink with thermally conductive grease (thermal conductivity 1-5 W/(m・K)), thermal pads, or phase change materials reduces contact thermal resistance and improves heat transfer efficiency.

Selection Recommendations:

Power ≤10W, Open Environment: Aluminum substrate + basic fins are sufficient.

10-30W, Semi-enclosed Environment: High thermal conductivity aluminum substrate + fine-toothed fins + thermally conductive grease.

>30W or Enclosed Environment: Ceramic substrate/thermoelectric separation substrate + heat pipes/vapor chamber + active cooling to ensure junction temperature is controlled below 85℃ and extend lifespan.


III. Selection and Application Recommendations

Scenario Matching: Select parameters based on the lighting space function, ceiling height, ambient temperature, and protection rating (e.g., IP20 indoor, IP65 outdoor).

Brand and Certification: Prioritize products with UL/CE/CCC certification, surge protection (1.5-2.0 kV), and low flicker to ensure safety and performance.

Dim and Smart Requirements: Confirm in advance whether the module is compatible with SCR/0-10V/DALI dimming and whether it supports integration with smart systems (e.g., WiFi/Bluetooth).

Thermal Design Redundancy: For high-power or long-duration operation scenarios, reserve 10-20% margin in the heat dissipation solution to prevent accelerated light decay due to high temperatures.
